Admissions

Thank you for considering St. Barnabas School as the right school for your child. We know selecting a school is a difficult process, so we are happy to help you learn more about St. Barnabas to help you determine if it is right for you and your child.

Registration packages for 2020 / 21 will be available at our Open House on Sunday January 26th.

The school is located at: 3980 Marron Ave., Long Beach, CA  90807, the office phone number is (562) 424-7476. School office hours are Monday- Friday 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. Email: Admissions@StBarnabasLB.org 

To save time you can fill out the application form in advance but you will need to drop it off in the school office to be considered for application. Please do not email the form.

Admissions Policy

St. Barnabas School of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles does not discriminate on the basis of race, color and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletic and other school administered programs. Likewise, St. Barnabas Parish School does not discriminate against any applicant for employment on the basis of sex, age, handicap, race, color and national and/or ethnic origin.

  • All incoming students are academically tested and have a pre-admission interview.
  • New Students: Priority will be given to families registered in and regularly attending and contributing to St. Barnabas Parish who submit application forms by the specified date. All other applicants will be considered subsequent to placement of parish families.
  • Kindergarten Admission: Two factors determine Kindergarten admission, following the priority status described above: applicant students must be five years of age by September 1 of the academic year for which they are applying and must demonstrate developmental readiness.

What grades do you offer?
Preschool through 8th grade.

What is the minimum age for Kindergarten?
Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by September 1st.

What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Transitional Kindergarten is a new program for children who are 4 years old by September 1. It bridges the path between preschool and Kindergarten, providing a developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with Kindergarten standards. It is a full-day program.

Transitional Kindergarten curriculum includes Religion, Language Arts (phonics, phoneme awareness, beginning sight words), Mathematics (counting,number sense, and basic manipulation of numbers), Science/Social Studies (as directed by CA state standards). The T-K students are required to wear school uniforms.

Are you accepting new students for my child’s grade?
We have waiting lists for most grades, if you are interested in transferring to St. Barnabas, please attend the open house or contact the school office for further information.

What are the school hours?
School begins at 7:50 am and ends at 2:50 pm, Monday to Thursday. On Friday, school starts at 7:50 am and ends at 12:30 pm.

Do you have before and after school programs?
Our Extended School Day Program is available from 6:30 am before school and to 6:00 pm after school every day. Students are given assistance in completing their homework during the after school program, in addition to other less academically focused activities. Fees may be paid either on a monthly basis or on an hourly basis as needed. More details are on our extended daycare page. The cost is on the Tuition and Fees page.

Where do St. Barnabas students go after 8th grade?

Do we have to be Catholic to attend?
All are welcome, regardless of faith.

Is Religious Education part of the curriculum?
All students participate in Religion classes, and the school is focused on providing a Catholic educational experince.

Do the students wear a uniform?
Yes. All students in grades T-K through 8th wear a full uniform which includes a formal uniform worn on days that the students attend Mass. There is a modified Preschool uniform. They wear an SBS Preschool t-shirt with comfortable bottoms. Uniforms are purchased from Vicki Marsha Uniforms.

Are there required parental Volunteer hours?
Yes, parents are required to perform 25 hours of service for the school, at least 5 of which must be for the Spring Event fundraiser. Service hours which are not completed can be bought out for $20/hour.

Are there many opportunities to complete Volunteer Hours outside of normal school hours?
Yes, there are many different opportunities to complete your parental service hours on your schedule, during the day, on weekends or in the evening. You are not required to have a specific ‘service job’ but rather encouraged to sign up for different events or tasks that fit your skills, interest and schedule. For example, you could write a FAQ list for the website.

Does the school offer any extra-curricular activities?
Yes! St. Barnabas has CYO supported sports program for grades 3-8, Muzirk piano instruction, Moving Mindz coding and STEM classes, Just Dance! dance classes, Skatedogs skateboarding lessons and safety classes, and musical theater rehearsals for students participating in the school musical.

Schedule

    • Contact the school office to schedule a readiness assessment for all
      prospective students, TK thru 8.

Receive

    • After completing the previous steps, you will receive an admissions decision
      by phone and mail.

Enroll

    • Confirm and complete the enrollment by signing and returning the
      admissions offer, and by submitting any required fees to the St. Barnabas
      School office.
